Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

National security is one area where we can expect bipartisan stupidity, and it's easy to understand why. Displays of insufficient condemnation are taken as not being hard enough, so the outcome is always an erosion of our liberties for (at best) modest outcomes. The bigger worry with this is how int...

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Worst thing about it is the bipartisan support. So it's not like we even have a sensible opposition up oppose it.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

After getting my degree, I've spent the next 12 years wondering why I didn't get a degree in something else. But unless you need a degree for a vocation, it's pretty easy to just learn stuff in your own time in whatever interests you.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Canberra always slows to a crawl in December, which suits me well. It's the time of year i can just relax.

Though this year I haven't gotten my work situation sorted out yet, so that's making me a little stressed/ nervous.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

I finally got rid of my Commonwealth Bank CC and savings account. No more paying account fees for me.

Final step in my path to financial maturity is to switch from my retail super fund to an industry one, but I've got to get my head around the whole life insurance thing first...

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix

It would be more exciting if I didn't already have the DVDs. But it's a good reminder to watch it again, even if I've been hanging out for Rebuild 4.0.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Our strategy tends to be just having coffee for breakfast, then having an early-ish lunch. So proximity to good coffee is essential for hotel selection. :P

These days surely all one needs to eat well is an internet connection on their phone. Thanks to trip advisor, I find great places to eat wherever I go.

I'm annoyed that I didn't make plans for Easter earlier - I sat on the knowledge that there's 3 public holidays in a week and didn't book anything.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

(Finally) got my full licence this week, so went wine touring around the local region. Spent way too much money on wine, but the cellar is now topped up with some good reislings and reds, so I'm pretty happy with that. Even got a few good drinkin' whites for the summer, and a couple of bottles for X...

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Yeah, it's a weird arrangement. The government can't hire contractors directly anymore; they can only use approved companies for them. So the contracting firms are necessary middlemen between the government and the people doing the work. And in that there are some companies who operate by keeping th...

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Two things: 1. Part of what I can differentiate myself on when I apply for jobs is price. When I put a figure that ensures I'm competitive, then a large fee on top of that may nullify the competitive gain I get by setting my price. 2. They do next to nothing on a weekly basis, and some take up to 20...

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Two contracting firms contacted me to go for the same role. I can only go with one so I asked which one has the lowest overhead. One rang me up and got shitty with me about asking, trying every rhetorical trick in the book to avoid disclosing how much they'll make off my labour. This industry sucks,...

Valve has been pretty good with their pricing so far. It's the other publishers that have been awful.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

It's cash in an abstract form that you can use with them instead of real money.

Every time you shop, you can trade 2,000 points for $10 off. Alternately you can cash out a nominal figure and use that like a gift card to pay with.

I get pretty much all my shirts from Bonds these days. I used to get plain tees from kmart/bigw, but I found they would start looking worn out after a few uses. The bonds shirts last ages.
