Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
^ How's that social media break going for you?
Hope everyone's Christmas is going well... Disco woke up at 5am and had to wait for me to rise around 8am
We had a quiet morning at home, lunch with my brother and his family plus his in-laws.
Got a decent loot of pressies - a big box of Lush bath bombs, some new boots & wallet from Diana Ferrari, 3 pairs of earrings, a bracelet, some Giorgio Armani perfume, a MAC eye shadow palette, sausage dog bottle opener, Llama mug, a book and a wireless charging dock for my phone/watch, a nice cheese board... pretty good haul!

That moment when you realise how much time has gone by when you see people for the first time after 20yrs and they're all balder and/or fatter.

I'd rather you kill yourself than ruin my day by having cricket on the TV all day too.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
You all have fun commenting about the joy/boredom of cricket. After a week off to mostly myself to re-energise, I'm heading out to catch up with friends.

Funny that, I'd rather watch cricket than kill myself.
Always interesting that people feel the need to let you know where they stand on someone you like that they don't.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Meh... I like cricket, but struggle to watch it, especially tests...
Where as BBL I find interesting enough to watch (Albeit while doing something else... )
And BBL is on pretty much every night now, so I am happy

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Started preparing for the job interview I've got on the 9th, and I'm baffled as to why they're even interviewing me. Nothing on my resume remotely lines up with their technology stack, and reaching about their interview process, I feel horrendously unqualified and the interview will be a waste of my time and theirs.
Now I've got the dilemma of whether to study my arse off over the next two weeks and hope that what I study aligns with what they ask, or just email them to call it off and save everyone's time.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Hopefully they have somebody with sense involved in the process...
It took me a couple of years to convince people that it was better to employ people with the right qualities/personality and train them, than it was to employ people with the right training and try to change their personality... once we started interviewing the right people we started retaining them, instead of the constant churn.
Obviously your application was close enough to what they want
(Or - if they are less honourable - you're there to beef up the numbers so they can show they interviewed widely before selecting the right candidate - who they have already chosen

Hope it's the former
If you're really concerned - ring the contact officer and ask - maybe frame it as "I'm not current with XXX, are you looking for somebody who can hit the ground running or will there be some time to get up to speed" or "Do you already have somebody with experience in the position"

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
I agree with this. I always call up to suss out how that position came about to be advertised, especially if it was previously a temp role and there's a person in that position and applying. Can save a lot of hassle since if they're making a position permanent, they probably want the person who's been in that role to get it. Of course, I always ask a few questions on the type of experience or specific skills they're after too that aren't clear in the PD. I find most contacts on PDs will be happy to provide that info as you still need to demonstrate that you have those skills/experience.ChainsawMcP wrote: ↑27 Dec 2018, 20:41If you're really concerned - ring the contact officer and ask - maybe frame it as "I'm not current with XXX, are you looking for somebody who can hit the ground running or will there be some time to get up to speed" or "Do you already have somebody with experience in the position"

Went to Coles to pick up a few things... thought I'd use those flybuy points I had been accumulating to pay for most of it.
Apparently I need to redeem credit online first or something or need to have a pin for my card to do it in store.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
It's private industry (big data) where all my experience is in Government web development.
Last night I started an intro Hadoop course online and started reading a textbook on algorithms I had lying around (in my "This may come in handy one day" pile), so at least for now the plan is to find it a go. I've got until the 7th before the company is back from holiday to see if I can learn anything in the mean time.
I think part of the problem is when I was googling them, people were saying their interviews are notoriously difficult - harder than Google even. And I'm nowhere near Google-smart...

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
I'd be tempted to go to the interview just to experience what they're like if they're really that hard.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
What sort of people actually post interview reviews online though?

It was someone responding to a question on Quora about the interview process for the company.

Might be something on Glassdoor as well.
In other news, is it just me or has EB Games actually increased their prices for the Boxing Day sale? eg I bought Spiderman off them for $29 around Black Friday, currently it's on "sale" for $57.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Wouldn't be surprised. Everything is in a constant sale these days that even the retail price is dressed up as one. Gonna guess there's too many products for most people to pay attention to.
