I don't understand the whole phone thing. Upgrading everytime a new one comes out. I've still got a HTC Desire, that works well.

We generally only update every second generation - so every 2 years, means that we can usually come out on top by selling our older handsets while they're still worth a few hundred bucks

That's the G710+ which doesn't have customisable lighting.

My phone will probably finally get upgraded next month, I have an Xperia Z (so purchased like april 2013), no repairs, no problems, even kept the factory screen protector. Only reason im upgrading is because my case is 99% rooted and I CBF trying to find another one the same online.

Personal choice really. We always go on contract, once the contract ends we sell our handsets (usually get $400-$500 each for them) and re-contract. Something we enjoy is having up to date smart phones, we work hard and we can afford it, so that's what we do.

This is what my bro did for many years... he used his phone enough to warrant a contract so he got the latest phone every two years too. These days, he's trying to not spend too much on a plan and Virgin mobile doesn't have the phone he wanted on the $40 plans so he "bought" one outright.

I on the other hand spend less than $80 on prepaid credit per year and don't need a $800+ smartphone. Hell, I'm still umming and ahring about a $400 one:

https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/ms ... n_10082016

I'm only considering this because my Lumia 920 plays up from time to time so I really do need to have a back up ready.

Anyway, there's more than one right way to have a mobile. As long as one uses it to the full extent to do what they need to and there's no other more cost effective option, it's a worthwhile purchase.

Pretty much.
My last two phones over the last ~6 years were about 150 bucks each from ebay, and I only replaced them when they outright die on me and fail to function anymore. Would love to get prepaid that cheap though, Mine tends to 'expire' after 30 days depending on the amount, still cheaper than these people you see paying ludicrous amounts per month however.

Going prepaid would be cheaper, it's a convenience thing really and one that I'm happy to pay for, particularly when it comes to data.. I need all the data

@Stoibs

Take a look at Virgin's 'simple' prepaid plan. Call rates are reasonable and comes with 100mb data and full virgin to virgin perks. Credit lasts 90 days but you retain unused credit and data if you recharge b4 expiry. Can only be signed up to online.

I also use VoIP a bit but that's like $2 at most I pay for landline calls.

It's both convenience, and enjoyment - neither of us want an out of date mobile device and we both chug through a reasonable amount of data each month. We both use them for work and personal reasons, and if we were to buy the phones we wanted outright we'd be up for close to $3,000 up front plus ongoing service fees. We're able to claim them on tax, so, whatevs.

Got both of these on sale at the Humble Store.

I needed a storage solution for my X-Wing miniatures so after googling some suggestions I decided to order one of these from eBay.

And while I was there I got one of these beard bibs because in our new place the bathroom mirror is to the side of the sink and not behind it, so this will just make trimming my beard much easier and cleaner.

Biggest reason to go on a post paid plan.

I did the maths a while back and prepaid just isn't bang for buck with data.

For anyone needing lots of data on the go every month, getting a post paid plan with handset thrown in is the way to go imho.

Agreed. If we purchased our preferred handsets outright, they would cost us $2,800 (for two). Our plans including the handsets cost $122/month each, so $5,856 over 24 months. If you take away the cost of the handsets (as we'd have to pay for those one way or another), we're paying $3,056 over 24 months which works out at around $64/month for unlimited calls, texts, MMS and 10GB data.

And then we usually make $1000 selling both handsets at the end.

Is that a fishing tackle box?
We've got similar looking things for our Boardgame minis.
Bunnings or other 'toolbox' type vendors should have a good selection too.

For iPhones, I agree with you. For Android, it's better to buy the generic Australian variant of a phone because it will usually get updates first (both minor bugfixes/security patches and major Android OS upgrades) because the generic country variants don't need carrier approval.

Disruptor4 just linked me to this post because I'm in the exact same situation. I've had my 920 for over 3 years and I've been getting SIM errors lately. I was thinking about just getting the SIM card replaced but the battery life is also pretty short these days so I'm considering moving to either a Lumia 950 or a Nexus 5X. They're basically the same phone overall; the choice is just whether or not I want to stick with Windows or head back to Android.

My 920 has the odd power drain which just heats up the phone and I lose all power within 2hrs. Annoying as hell. Last time it happened it wouldn't start charging too. Luckily it only happens once every 3-6 months.

I don't think it is Windows Phone issue, more so I think the phone is refurbished. Have had the phone for less than 2yrs too. I still need to do some research in the common issues 950 has. Don't want to buy a lemon.
