Watches

Post by Disco » 21 Nov 2015, 21:24

I was chatting with Moose the other day and it appears we both have tastes in watches we can't afford, and then I saw villageidiots purchase and thought I'd throw up a post as I'm considering a new watch myself.

I'm currently wearing a Sieko SNK809 automatic, with a leather strap rather than the defalt nato band, and while I like it, it's not really scratching my watch itch.

Currently I'm looking at an upgrade early next year and although I'd really love a Rolex Submariner, I'm several thousand dollars short and am either looking at a knock off noobmariner v5, or a Steinhart Ocean 1 black. It all comes down to whether I think I could live with myself wearing a knock off  So what do you wear, what do you want, and general watch thread

Steinhart Ocean 1:

Yeah, I like dive watches!

I have a watch that is made for the 21st century. LG G Watch, $108. Is excellent.

But yes, those watches are very pretty.

I had a smartwatch that Mrs Disco gave me, and while I really liked it I also think a watch is more than just a timepiece, it's an expression of yourself and a fashion statement - hence why I want something that goes with boardies and thongs at the beach to a suit.

It's also why I struggle with the knock off (albiet a good one) vs a real brand watch - some of the replica Rolex's I've seen go for upwards of $1200 USD.

An homage is not a replica discobrah. :snooty:
Not my pic, what I'm wearing though(mine has rather a lot more oxidization, the bronze/alu blend they've made goes this interesting gray/green colour):

Oddly enough out of the run of 100 i got my birth year, was pretty happy.

Next purchase will probably be this :

Although I'm also leaning towards the club dunkel and the tangente:

Am currently squirreling money to see what Omega decide to do for the 50th moon landing anniversary.

I also highly recommend Toshi Straps if you need a new band or want some options, he does great work and you can choose your materials.

Marketing aside, I'm pretty sure every smart watch on the market was made for a cereal box in the 80's.

That's a cool watch there.

This chick who fitted my new shoes the other day had this nice watch, it had bronze border and hands and white face, and bronze coloured leather band. Was very pretty.

Yeah for sure. Unfortunately for me, I tend not to give too much of a crap about fashion. I do have a Seiko which is pretty IMO, gold and silver with dark blue face. But the smartwatch is just so handy for me to have, so I rarely wear it.

Very individual thing though. I have a mate who has a relatively expensive watch (Do you consider $3k to be expensive? I know a watch fanatic who thinks that is chump change for a "nice" watch) that I think is kinda ugly. Whatever floats your boat.

Edit: Smartwatches are still very much in their infancy. There are going to be a lot more types and designs and options to choose from going forward. Personally I think it'd be really cool to have a smartwatch with a display that is transparent when off, and a normal watch behind it. That technology doesn't exist yet though afaik but we'll get there eventually.

Wife got this Ctiizen for me a couple of years ago, it uses an 'eco-drive' battery that can use sunlight and artificial light to power it, so I should never need to replace the battery.

Ancient Rip Curl watch, that I got 2nd hand, with a Casio band that fit after I had worn through the 2 leather bands the watch had when I got it

There are some miles on that one by the looks of it Makena!

I'm pretty certain that I'll grab the Ocean 1 when it comes time to upgrade, early next year.

I hate all these nice watches...
MY wrists are so small that I can't just buy a watch, it has to have a nice small face on it otherwise it looks huge on my arm.
Usually they end up being female watches that don't look too girly :D

You would think. But the problem is, for a watch the blue needs to be like a feature wall: used sparingly. As it is in my current watch:

And then there is this, that i want - but i will probably never actually buy... because i cant justify dropping 8-10k on a watch

I have the opposite problem, I have really big wrists and most watches look too small on me :/

To be honest, I used to agree but I've spent more on Gaming PC's over the years and consoles than I would on a Rolex, and I don't have any of those anymore (except the PS4 and curent PC), but if I'd spent that on a watch, I'd still have it.

My only analogue watch, from the Bedlam collection (House of horology)

I have a couple of smartwatches, but really most smartwatches look the same, so not much point posting them.

How small are your wrists? Mine are like 6.5 inches or something fucked up like that and i still find plenty of variety in watch choices. I think my current daily is 48mm lug to lug, any bigger and you're on that flava flave time anway.

My wrists are 15.5cm's... or 6 inches...
My current watch (when the battery isn't dead) is a Michael Hill watch. It has had every link possible taken out of it.
