Show us your latest purchase - Summer 2019/20

Post by Mugsy » 01 Dec 2019, 18:23

Didn't realise it's now summer when I posted this morning! Moved my morning purchase here.

Both the girlfriend and I wanted contoured pillows to sleep on...

Image

And got my replacement for my Lumia 950 now...

Image

JB Hifi have reduced their price for the Oppo Reno 2Z from $599 down to $449... 5% price beat at Officeworks = $426.55 price for Mugsy. Winning!

It might get cheaper before the end of the year but I'm sick of looking at phone reviews and comparison websites. Plus this gives me a month to get a case, screen protector and wait for the 128Gb microSD card I ordered to come. Well timed that microSD card purchase was.

$5 locally! Hoping to bottle my 2 brews later this week - been a pretty cheap endeavour as I've managed to buy almost everything second hand or have it given to me, assuming the beer is drinkable I'll come out ahead over the Christmas period

Those cappers are awesome. Just make sure you don't set it too low unless you like shattered glass :P

Yeah I've got a mix of bottles (60 longnecks for $25) that are half screw half pop top, so a hand capper didn't seem like a great idea - plus I think the idea of the gadget isn't to push the cap DOWN onto the bottle, it's to seal it around the edge of the bottle?

Hand cappers are useless, getting a stand one was the way to go. I have the same one, it works really well. Otto is right though, you need to set the height correctly, as low as you can get but still having a bit of clearance works best.

Glad I didn't get tempted by the hand capper, bottled 56 longnecks on the weekend so they'll be reading for tasting at Xmas - I've been told to leave them for 2 weeks in darkness and then try a taste of each. I did a Lager with honey and a Pacific Ale kit, they both smell good so hopefully they're drinkable! I have a whole fridge just about dedicated to them so they'll go well over Christmas I think. I'm doing keto at the moment but will make some exceptions for the holidays and get back on the horse in Jan:

In purchase news.. bought the upgrade kit for my H2R model, holy cow.. so detailed, those springs are TINY.

Awesome stuff dude  If it smells good when bottling it should taste pretty good once its properly fermented, the biggest difference I found when brewing was getting the temps right... if you can pitch your yeast when the wort is around 20c you should get a pretty good result. I used to do pretty big wort boils, around 6 or 7 litres of water/malt/hops/whatever, let it cool down a bit, then add a 10l box of spring water out of the fridge before pitching (then the rest room temp water) and get the temp pretty close to 20c or so. You'll work out your method better as you go but the closer you can get to the ideal temp the better results you will get 8-)

Hopefully that makes sense as I just got home from my work xmas party and im sorta just typing whats coming to mind right now :D :D

Perfect sense, I used warm water but couldn't tell you exactly the temp, that is something I need to control better next time I think - I'm going to buy one of those digital hydrometers that go into the wort for better monitoring at some point in the future although it's going to take me quite some time to get through 56 long necks, so no rush.

I've been told to leave them sit for a minimum of 2 weeks which is great I'll chuck half a dozen of each into the fridge for Christmas, but am I better off storing the others outside the fridge? I hear they can continue to improve a bit and unsure if a sudden drop in temperature would halt that process if I store them all in the fridge?

Yes outside the fridge is best until you are ready to drink them... the yeast will still be active and will carbonate your beer by eating up the sugar you added at the end (im assuming?) but if it goes straight in the fridge the yeast will slow down somewhat.

I'm not expert on home brewing. But a wine cooler is generally warmer than a standard fridge.
You could try a wine cooler first, then go to the fridge. That way it isn't instantly cold.

Wine fridge is what i was considering doing (cairns is too hot) but you need to basically destroy an expensive fridge. The bonus is that you can set an exact temp.

Got told by the girlfriend that we're going to be doing secret santa at the xmas lunch at her friend's place... and most of them have just had kids. So thank god for the $10 voucher from Myer I got earlier in the week. Was gonna get myself another pair of shorts since I'm... short on shorts (pun not intended) but a cheap secret santa gift is just as good I guess.

You can get cheap pre-wired ones.
Something like this.
I use one in my Wine Cooler converted to a Cigar Humidor.

The second one is a reprint as unfortunately, Sir Christopher Lee passed away some time ago. No knowing if I buy a unique one if it is actually his autograph or not. With a reprint - usually, they're real.

Sadly the reprinted one is too small to frame - doesn't go with the ones I have framed. So my search for a decent reprint autographed photo continues.

Discounted to $39 with a further $10 off and then further $20 reimbursement from my credit card for shopping from Kogan.com. Cheapest massage ever!

In other consumerism news, the girlfriend and I went out tonight to get a cricket ball, xmas stickers, plus veges to cook with. We ended up buying:

- 2L Coke
- 2x box of Jatz
- cheese spread
- 300mL Nudie juice
- and a children's book on Feelings

How the fuck did that happen?

And some new body shells for the kids RC cars. Hopefully they fit.

Ooooooh! Nice score kharis!

The girlfriend wants a Huawei Mate 30 Pro but the lack of Google apps natively and the fact that it's not widely sold here is troubling. We're on the look out for the P30 Pro atm. I'll stick with my $600 phone bought at $425... it'll run Diablo Immortal - lol

Hardly Normal had this down to $988... then price beaten by 5% at Officeworks. OW must be sick of me abusing their price beat policy on mid range and flagship mobile phones.
