Thoughts/Questions re Mystic Theurge

Post by Sathias » 25 Jan 2019, 09:36

Hi all

I haven't played too many pure casters in NWN so planning to change that with a Mystic Theurge build, planning to use the Skeleton sub-race and end up either with Lich form (via the Undead Form quest) or preferably Demilich once I hit Mythic levels. The eventual build will likely be Wiz 5 / Cleric 5 / MT 30.

However, I have a few questions with regards to this.

a) What are peoples thoughts on what school to go as far as Spell Focus? Currently considering either Evocation, Necromancy, and Conjuration. Evocation for Bigbys, Implosion, WOF, Meteor Storm. Necromancy as it is probably the best fit thematically, and for Harm/Mass Harm, Wail, and Horrid Wilting. Conjuration for Storm of Vengeance, Acid Fog and Creeping Doom as will likely go plant.
b) I'll probably go Plant as one of my Cleric Domains, what other Domain could be a good option?
c) Are the Epic Spells worth considering? If so, which ones? Thinking of taking Epic Warding but unsure about the others.
d) I was thinking about Still Spell so I could wear plate for some extra AC, but the tradeoff of 4 feats seems like a bit much. Would people agree with that assessment, especially considering there are crafting alternatives that allow for some limited armour use?

Any other tips welcome :)

a) I would personally go Evo/Conj for your foci. Necromancy sounds very theme-appropriate, but mechanically has very little application other than Harm and Horrid Wilting - so many things at high levels have death magic immunity that it (sadly) diminishes the worth of spells like Wail of the Banshee.

b) Magic and Water domains both grant you access to Ice Storm as a circle 5 cleric spell. Even though you would have it already as a wizard, if you really need all the ice storms you can get, this isn't a bad choice. Similarly, Destruction domain will give you Acid Fog as a circle 6 cleric spell. Evil domain gives you Negative Energy Burst at circle 3, where you can afford to jack around with your spell slots quite a bit once your buffs of choice are taken care of - that strength decrease on enemies can be a real help. All of these more or less sound like they may fall in line with the kind of character you're going for (both thematically and mechanically), so you have some options! (These are in opposition to the choices like War, Trickery, Healing, or Animal)

c) Epic Warding for sure. If you're not planning to be in the melee, Epic Mage Armour loses its luster. I can't really speak on the two summon feats - perhaps someone with more experience with them can answer for those. Hellball is totally not worth it; Greater Ruin is very optional, but can be a butt-saver in a pinch where you need that shot of high damage and have no other sources of damage prepared that can affect the target. It also bypasses spell mantles and such if you need to interrupt or finish off an enemy caster quickly.

d) I would personally advise against Still Spell for an MT, you will be fighting for feats as it is trying to keep two casting stats high. Spend your metamagic instead on Extend and Maximize mainly (Empower or Silent are good tertiary options), and yes, take advantage of the sources of arcane spell failure reduction if you really want to use armour or a shield. It will be limited, but it's still something.

Final tip: Be prepared to have to use radial menus to select some spells, both on enemies and for buffs. Unless you're using only long series of a single spell and its metamagicked counterparts, you will literally have too many spells to fit in your slots even if you don't slot anything else but spells. It's crazy.

For some reason what should have been Artemis Kai's build document just mentions the items I wanted for a few equipment slots...
However, I've found a level 22 version in my local vault.
As a rather thematic build I went with Specialist Wizard Necromancy. Stops me from using Divination Arcane spells, but I still had True Sight from Cleric. :)
Went with Spell Focussing in both Conjuration and Necromancy as well.
For some reason went with Healing and Plant domains. The Healing is obvious, but I don't recall using Creeping Doom at all, so I guess I didn't like it.
Extend, Empower and Maximise were all taken so I could shift spells into whatever slot worked best.
This snapshot is mostly using Missile Storms, Flame Arrows, Bigby's, Black Tentacles, Undeath to Death, Word of Faith and Harm. Its still missing a lot of Wizard spells, since I was waiting to find the scrolls. Later on I used Wail of the Banshee, Finger of Death, Mass Harm and Destruction a bit more. Can't recall if I used Horrid Wilting.
Wail of the Banshee can wipe a whole pack of weak enemies in a single cast, but only if you have invested in Necromancy.

Thank you both, some very useful info there :) Can Epic MT's take Mythic spells available to Cleric or Wizard?

For domains thinking Plant and Magic... I reckon at higher levels AOE spells should be useful (hence Plant) and Magic gives both Negative Energy Burst and Ice Storm :)

Sadly no, MTs cannot take the cleric/mage specific mythic spells, they will only have Mystic Union available. However, you have all the other mystic caster feats available, such as the Master of (x) series and Mythic Spell Focus.

That's cool, it was a bit hopeful I admit :P
