UT2004

Post by Mini » 01 Dec 2015, 16:13

There was talk by a few people in the Random Game discussion thread about trying to get some online games of UT 2004 going.
Thought it best to move it out here and see what we can organise..

I'm not much help in this regards, because I have never played it online, or looked into how the servers work.

But discuss and plan away :)

P.S. I am also happy to keep this initial post updated with details of any server or nights that this might happen on.

I currently have UT99 and UT2k4 installed so keen for either.

Not a huge fan of the vehicle stuff any more, so DM and CTF would be best!

Yep I am keen to play! Some vanilla TDM or CTF would be my preference! Server stuff shouldn't be too much hassle to sort out.

It turns out this is in my steam library, so I'm up for this.

Wow, my wife and I used to play this (the demo) when we were dating! Was the only game she ever played and she got so good she regularly beat me!

Not sure how it's aged but what memories!

Edit: If I want to play this on LAN (my wife and I) do I need two Steam copies or will one suffice?

I played against bots the other day after failing to find any servers with pings below 200 and I had a bit of a tough time to.

I had the bots set to auto adjust skill level and after about 3 matches they were on Inhuman (2nd highest) and I was getting my arse kicked. For some reason it never scaled back down so after a few more rounds it was just no fun and I quit.

I put them on novice because I just want to mindlessly kill them all. If I'm looking for something more intense/challenging, I'd play Insurgency or something.

I'm really not sure unfortunately. I got my copy from GOG awhile back, so I can't even test it for you as mine is definitely DRM free. If anyone is able to start their Steam copy with Steam complete shutdown, I would say the likelihood is yes.

EDIT: This info might help you. It sounds like using an official UT2004 patch on the Steam version of UT2004 will make it DRM free (likely overwrites the main .exe) so that could be an option for you. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/s ... ?t=2341389

I'm always down for DM and TDM chaos!

I always play against 30 godlike bots in DM, with a 999 kill limit when the UT bug strikes. It's a brilliant way of training!

Is the original disc release compatible with the steam copy for online play? Or will I need to buy it on steam..?

I have countless discs with custom maps and mods. Would love to see some of the old classic UT maps recreated for 2004 be on the map rotation.

We NEED to have original Facing Worlds.

And afaik the retail and steam versions should be compatible.

Yeah I don't believe there is any difference between retail and Steam (other than applying any patches to the retail version). And the classic maps like Facing Worlds are the best!

Thanks guys. I bought ut2004 collectors ed back in the day and never got in the online scene much. Played a lot over lan with my bro though but mainly onslaught.

Agree that Facing Worlds is a must. I can't remember if I have Hall of Giants 2k4 remake but that's another must have.

Anyone get into Bombing Run?

I was more of a fan of Tactical Ops 2.2.0 and Unreal Fortress.

I fucking LOVE Bombing Run!

Also played a lot of Tactical Ops when it was popular. I even bought the retail release.

Yeah I bought the retail release too but it lost some of the charm that 2.2.0 had. Could never put my finger on it.

We gotta do instagib facing worlds with the fat boy mutator. It's crazy hard to score but not impossible so very satisfying when it happens. Fatboy just evens things up with good players becoming visibly easier targets.

So we have some plans for server details...
But do we have anywhere that we can have these servers hosted?
