Path of Exile

Anyone getting daily mini patch updates to download? I'm using the steam client atm and get these 3-30Mb files once or twice a day.

I've only just reinstalled this last night, so I will let you know if that ends up being the case for me :) I think they just had a major update so it could be little fixes being pumped out each day.

I got a 9mb one over night so it looks like it's not just you. Looking at one of their recent announcements it appears they are focusing on a lot tidy up stuff, fixes and bug killing etc. I'd guess all the little updates are simply that.

Must be two years ago now since I played this properly. They have since reset all of my stats and I had to reapply them, with no freakin' idea of what I did in the past. Threw it all together but I have no clue how close it is to my old build, or if I can even remember half the stuff about the game.

It is one of the finest examples of Free-To-Play ever though! After I finished my first play through of it I spent $30 on god knows what (I know I have a pet scorpion, but I can't remember what else) as a "thanks for such an awesome free experience!"

I've yet to play it through properly but from what I have played, it's quite professional effort. Way too many games in my Steam Library now.

I've just stared playing this but feel a bit overwhelmed. The passive skill tree - it's like a monster.

Is there somewhere I could find an up to date guide I could follow that's newbie friendly (specifically the passive skill tree)? I'm thinking I like the sound of playing a witch.

Not sure on a guide sorry, mate. Maybe the Steam community guides will have one specifically on that. It is certainly daunting and I was horrified to come back and find my skill tree complete reset. I had finished one play through and had things just how I wanted them but at some point since I last played they changed things and totally wiped that. It's well worth the effort though, such a great free-to-play game!

Kendrite, I found this to be useful for understanding the foundations of the game when I started playing a while back:

http://www.poepro.net/things-i-wish-i-k ... -of-exile/

Gearing, linked slots and how the skill gems is probably the first thing to get one's head around. That and trading.

But with the last 1 or 2 expansions shaking things up when it comes to build creation as I believe they introduced sub-class specialisations. I think a lot of the old guides aren't 100% relevant now. But from what my bro and some other players have told me, you need to start with the end in mind as allocating a point into an unnecessary branch of the skill tree can stuff things up for optimising a build. You need to do some research into what sort of builds there are... this is probably the best way to know what each part of the skill tree does (at least the sections relevant to your class), and you can then either follow the relevant build guide or mix and match to make your own build.

Ha! PoE is awesome! I would have gone back to playing it if it wasn't for the fact Victor Vran will probably grab my attention now. (controller support wins out... and jumping of course!)

Loving Path of Exile again at the moment! Started through with a new character; a witch with a focus on lightning. Managed to get a whole lot of skill/support gems for lightning and been working my may through the passive skill tree adding as much towards this focus as I can. Probably too singularly skill focused but so far it is working well - I'm a walking thunderstorm! I haven't looked at any guides for builds in PoE as I really like experimenting with such a big skill tree by myself and seeing how it goes; if a characters sucks then so be it, but it is much more fun doing it as your own creation through trial and error. Got her up to level 30 so far and into Act 3 and hoping to get through her first campaign play-through before the Atlas of Worlds update drops on Sept 3rd. Also been jumping into some co-op with random players for the first time, definitely more fun with a few players!

I forgot about this one... now I have kinda done what I wanted too with the D3 season, I might have a look at jumping back in...
And I hate looking at guides, I like experimenting and seeing what works for me, because builds don't always have the same play style as I do, as they just don't feel right.

You should do it! Path of Exile just gets better and better! I've never been fond of the first few coastal maps in the game but towards the end of Act 1, from the prison onward, the world gets much more interesting. The game also used to have a horribly slow loading screen when you launched the game, but they have finally sorted it and the game launches very quickly.

I think many people find the skill tree daunting at first, as it's fucking huge, but if you take a moment to decide what areas you want to focus on with your character it becomes very easy to plot a decent path through the skill tree to get all the right kinds of benefits from it. You just need to look for where the right skill bonuses are in it and work towards them.

I'm always up for creating another character to play through in a party!

That annoying long load screen annoyed the hell out of me. Good that they've fixed it. I might need to load the game up again, though I'm not sure about learning another skill system. Bit exhausted with learning the intricacies of Diablo 3 over 4yrs.

Me too! I used to get the urge to play it, then I would think about how long it would take to load and would decide against it. It's so much better now!

I get like that with games too. It's why I don't mind League of Legends but really can't be bothered trying to learn Dota 2. Getting some kind of understanding of one system take up enough mental space!

That's the bit that always crushes me when I try to go back to it.
If it gets better after that I may try and persevere. May try it again if I can manage to finish my Diablo 3 seasonal journey as well.

We're gonna have to get everyone over the line with the D3 seasonal journey... That way we can all start on PoE for some co-op fun. All my characters are low level so I'm sticking with them. Not regearing another fresh toon if you know what I mean - lol

The coastal areas in Act 1 are definitely the weak point of the game, but it fits in with the story as you wash ashore and head inland. Towards the end of Act 1 you hit a prison and things start to get much more interesting, and can feel like Diablo 2 at times. It doesn't take long to rush your way through the Act to that point. From the prison onward you will find areas like forests, caves, crypts, sewer systems, town like maps, docks, temples etc, so it definitely has more to engage your interest. It tends to feel "darker" the further in you go.

I'm pretty sure I downloaded it recently but I can't remember ever getting around to giving it a go, and I recently did a fresh OS install so I wouldn't have it installed now. I'll download it again and give it a go! I like LoL a lot, but I suck at it and pretty well stick to co-op vs AI, so I expect to suck at HotS too!

This is good to hear! I too got very tired of the beach parts the first two times I installed it, yet I keep hearing about how great the game is. Will definitely head back and push through to the prison section.

Well worth persevering through those coastal maps to get to the better stuff, in my opinion. I think they have done a great job of refining this game over the years and have added lots to it, such as Prophecies and Masters which kind of act as side missions to the main campaign. The next expansion/update, Atlas of Worlds, is due on the 3rd of Sept and as normal will be free. PoE is still great for only making you pay for cosmetic type stuff, or extra account features (that I've never needed anyway, such as more stash pages). Best example of free-to-play that I've ever tried, so much so that I've spent so money on it purely as a "thank you".
