Fallout 4 - play discussion

The FPS elements have been improved from Fallout 3/New Vegas, certainly, but it's still an RPG at heart. I guess if 3/NV weren't your thing this won't be either though, no.

I can understand people not liking the genre change, but for me personally, I was a big fan of the first two games, but FPRPG is by far my favourite genre. Between Fallout 3, New Vegas, Skyrim and Bloodlines I have racked up at least 1200 hours.

The thing I find interesting is no one wishes that GTA was still top down, people embraced the move to 3d. It's not the case to the same degree with Fallout

Trying to power through FNV before Tuesday, not going to make it but it's making me pumped for FO4, the only thing I didn't really like with 3 and NV (to a lesser extent) was the gunplay and it looks like they've improved that a lot so I can't wait. I just hope the dialogue wheel isn't a downer, also some of the companion AI looks lol still, so might be a loner in this one.

So nervous about this. Never played the other games in the series and this is the first time in a long time I've been able to get an AAA title (hopefully) on day one. So excited to be part of the hype wave, but nervous it might suck *fingers crossed*

You know, I love me a good fprpg as well, I really do. And I'm sure that when I eventually get Fallout 4 I'll love the daylights out of it, it will be brilliant zipping around the wasteland killing enemies, crafting stuff and generally causing havoc.

BUT! The character system still bugs me about this one. It seems to be the classic Bethsoft streamlining the character system to beyond recognition as an RPG. I had the same issue with Skyrim as well, although I really enjoyed it, it didn't really feel very RPGish to me. It was basically just walking around, clobbering enemies for loot and being told about some poor sap's arrow to the knee...

Nothing to do with perspective. If some crazy cat did FO1/2 from a first person perspective with FO3 style combat I think I'd still love the daylights out of it. Just leave everything else alone and it would be fine...

I'd highly recommend building a set of Skyrim mods around Perkus Maximus. It is an absolute monster of a mod and makes the perk trees much more complex and unique. It might add more of an RPG feel to it for you.

I was dubious about the new perk based system for Fallout 4 but I'm a bit more open to the idea now, I feel like it will allow characters more specialised into various areas and hence improve replayability. The thing I enjoy the most about their games is getting immersed in the world, rather than thinking about meta-concepts of character building and min-maxing, allowing your character to develop organically. It will be interesting to see if these changes help or hinder that goal.

At any rate I'll be waiting for reviews and so forth for FO4. At least that's what I say now, there's always the (rather good) chance I'll crumble and buy anyhow. I'm known to be rather impulsive...

It really is. Add on Frostfall and Apocalypse Spells and the game world is much more realistic and dangerous as well, including being able to die of hypothermia if you stay in arctic areas for too long without good survival skills or protective magic.

Hopefully there isn't too much of a download needed with the retail version. The wait will be excruciating

Got mine preloaded on Saturday. Though it probably wasn't necessary because I'm halfway through Deus Ex: Human Revolution and I really want to get that finished before I lose the next couple of months to this game.

We're making our own shelter out of beds and pillows and setting up both TVs in the living room to play on Steam Big Picture mode, I also need to come up with some sort of Nuka Cola cocktail to get us well and truly radiated while we play.

Wow, reading all this makes me sad the game doesn't have some form of couch coop as well. Running around the wastelands splitscreen with friends would have made this the ultimate gaming bliss...oh well...
