For those who don't know what OpenTTD is, it's an open source game based on Transport Tycoon, a classic simulation game. You can find the official website here: https://www.openttd.org/en/

You run a transport company, plot routes for buses and cargo trucks, build train lines and shipping routes and planes. If you're playing online you can run a company in cooperation with other players.

What settings do you run on your server, Forgetful Lion? Breakdowns, vehicle limits, etc?

No breakdowns and limited to four planes.

Current server is a big long narrow temperate map with only one company allowed. Might reset later tonight to another temperate map, maybe 1024x1024.

No custom GFX (yet) although thinking about using FIRS for something different. :)

Hadn't checked in with OpenTTD in a while, had no idea anyone was doing anything so ambitious as a new industrial system. That's awesome. Holler if you do get FIRS going, would definitely be interested in having a go.

I don't understand train networks unless it's literally 1 train per train line :P

Looks like there will be a new version of OpenTTD released soon.

Might be a good time to actually restart the server then.

What's wrong with 1 train per line? I mostly do it that way too, signalling is hard. :D

Yeah I played when Makena ran the server recently and everyone was doing super complicated looking stuff with the train lines, etc. It's over my head.

Might take you guys up on the offer when the new version hits. As I'm the same as Nacimota, over my head. I tried watching videos and had no idea how to signal properly. Like which ones do you use and shit?

I'm going to assume you at least understand how the basic one-way/two-way signals work. :P

First of the slightly more advanced signal types are: Pre-signals (the yellow and grey ones). Don't worry these are pretty easy to understand their basic functionality. :)

There are 3 types:
  • Block entry Image
  • Block exit Image
  • Combo entry Image
Essentially a block entry signal is read IFF all the block entry signals following it are red. Canned example:

Combo entry signals act as both a block entry and exit signal so you can chain them like this:

I'll post again soon about path signals.

The OpenTTD wiki is also a good place to learn about signals instead of admiring my crappy paint skillz
