Nostalgia: PC Games you miss

Post by CherryRed » 07 Nov 2015, 21:08

There's games out there that we all played and now miss... some were played decades ago, some just got shitter with new releases.

For me, the game that got shittier with it's newer releases was The Sims. The Sims 3 was the best of the lot in my opinion, The Sims 4 seriously dumbed down the design/build/customisation tools and designing properties was something I really got a kick out of.

Games I am nostalgic for and would love to play again (except I know they'd suck because of graphics):

The Police Quest series

the Leisure Suit Larry series

I loved these games.

Which games do you miss?

The original Delta Force games, friends and I used to play 1v1 sniper matches in the maps that were essentially endless hilly grasslands that lasted hours, stalking each other, often not seeing anyone for hours before taking that awesome shot they weren't expecting.

Those were tense matches, back in the old days of dialling into each others modems and some inconsiderate family member picking up the handset disconnected the line -.-

The Last Ninja (and many others on the C64). Every time I hear the music to that game it sends me back in time.

I remember setting up a LAN game of Delta Force 2 with 3 of my friends. Damn that was fun. I remember being in hysterics every time I saw the "player found a punji stick and died" message...yeah I've always been the sympathetic sort.

Games I miss? Probably anything from the Lucasarts adventure game line fills that bill. Day of the Tentacle was a wonderful, silly adventure game. Fate of Atlantis was well thought out and the multiple paths was very clever. Loom...wow, that game seriously needs a remake, the combination of music, atmosphere and clever music based puzzles was sublime. So many good titles...

Ever play Lemmings on an Amiga 500? Three words make it the best version of the game: Split screen multiplayer. So much fun sabotaging your friends and trying to steal their lemmings...

Sadly mine isn't that old, but something that has been ruined with later releases... Rainbow Six Raven Shield.

Command and Conquer and Unreal Tournament for me.

Whilst there is a community created version of UT being developed (and fully supported by Epic) it remains to be seen how much community backing the game gets. Due to how basic the levels and models were in the first UT (compared to the later iterations) there was a massive community developing content for it and this kept the game fresh for years for me. Not sure how much support there would be these days.

But with C&C, EA seems to have trouble creating a worthy C&C game these days.

I like my classic FPS and RTS games.

AvP2. That is probably the game I spent most of my gaming time in, ever. Thousands of hours in game, then many more on the different clan and tournament forums for it.

I really wish they'd release a Rainbow Six like the older ones, just with prettier graphics. There's nothing like planning out a mission in meticulous detail and then watching it derail. :D

Red Alert is probably my favourite game of all time, if anyone has got Spotify search for Frank Klepacki and add some of the classics (Hell March, Crush, Workmen, Mud!) to your playlist :)

I also sunk a lot of time into Grand Prix 2, Tie Fighter, and Falcon 4.0, I'm thinking of getting back into the latter through BMS as it's amazing what they've done with a game from 1998. The dynamic campaign was really awesome, and no one has done anything like it since that I've seen. It's what DCS is really missing to go to the next level.

The CnC bundle thing on origin is actually pretty good.
I put in my CD keys from my boxed versions of all the games and now I have digital copies that work on my PC as they are.
Always good for a little nostalgia indulgence every now and then.

Did anyone else get really upset with the Abe's Oddysee "New and Tasty" HD remake? I feel like it massively cheapened a beautiful game. :/

I've avoided it in case of that feeling. Sometimes it is better to just live with the fond memories. *fart*

I'm kind of curious now, because I haven't played it, but what's wrong with "New and Tasty?"
