Lightning Broadband

Post by killer_kaino » 03 Apr 2016, 22:49

Was watching TV tonight and saw a story on Lightning Broadband and how they are promising better speeds than the NBN by building their own high tech network. Wondering if anyone else saw it as well and what their thought on it were.

They're doing it with microwave links. https://www.lightningbroadband.com.au/technology/
Will require line of sight to the main dish or apparently to someone else who has it, using them as a repeater for others in the area I guess. But if they're not servicing your area yet you're still boned.

I think there's some other companies doing similar things via various wireless systems since the speeds are better these days, though I'm not sure what the latency's like? They're claiming it's low latency, but I'm a little dubious.
I tried running their speed test and either it's on a terrible link or is simply bogus, since it's telling me my download is 13-17mbps while Speedtest.net says 95mbps. Or 80mbps if I do a worst-case by using a server in Perth.

If the NBN isn't scheduled and you're desperate for more speed it can't hurt to give them a call and see if it's even available? Unless someone here is using it? I didn't see them mentioned anywhere when I was looking for ISPs late last year.

Have had a little experience with microwave links, setup probably they do perform pretty good. Think as long as they don't over sell latency shouldn't be an issue as with any network.

Yeah WiMAX technology is pretty popular. Speedtest seems a little weird.

Apparently they go by demand, if you can get enough people to equire in your area they with come to you (so I'm told by email)

We're with these guys. Had bad ongoing issues for the first few weeks but now that they've sorted things out we're really happy.

We can only get ADSL1 where we live which got us almost 1 megabyte p/s. We're on the cheapest plan. Dumped the land line and old ISP so for the same price we were paying we now have 8 megabytes p/s (almost).

If you want me to post a speed test or something let me know.

It's more latency and jitter I'm curious about. Some wireless is inconsistent with ping

I ran this a few times and it does fluctuate quite a bit.

Can you select a Melbourne ping test Server? Might be better results

There doesn't seem to be a Melbourne Server for some reason. Closest is Adelaide or Pyrmont.

I don't think I'd recommend it for fast paced online games.

I can play Star Citizen, Guild Wars 2 and games like that OK though.
