New build feedback pls

Post by Sathias » 21 Feb 2018, 09:59

Hi all

It's that time of year again where I plan a new build, the last few years I haven't actually pulled the trigger on it but this year for sure  Just wanted some feedback in case I've chosen something incompatible, or if anyone has any suggestions for better options. See below.

Problem at the moment is that GPU prices are higher than they should be due to stupid crypto miners.
I love my H100i, so much quieter than the old stock coolers I was used too, and keeps my AMD CPU cool.

What case are you putting it all into?
And I'm assuming you are bringing some other HDD's over from an old build?

Agree on the GPU costs :(. What are you using for a display?

Yeah agreed on the GPU costs but not sure that is going to change any time soon :( I have a Corsair Obsidian 800D which my current desktop build is in, I have a few SSD's and HD's in that, some of which I will bring over.

I have a Dell 23inch 1080p monitor atm, once I get this built the next purchase will likely be a new monitor around 27inch with 144Hz, 1440p and Gsync

$1249 is not bad for a 1080ti though, they're not dropping much in price because they're still the fastest.
Did you consider the non-reference-cooled Inno3D card also from PCCG? https://www.pccasegear.com/products/409 ... ti-x2-11gb
It's only $50 cheaper but it might run a bit cooler/quieter than the blower style ASUS. Probably not a huge difference either way, clock speeds being the same.

Definitely google your chosen board and m.2 nvme support. Things are probably fine now, but when I built mine last year there was some fiddling involved in setting it as a boot drive. Helpful to know in advance! :)

Have you thought about using any i5 over an i7? In terms of raw power the i5s are meant to be better for gaming - at least until more games get better at multi-core multi-threading.

What do you guys think about Spectre? A friend was telling me the performance in the Intel chipsets is down compared to the Ryzen because they had to patch out the vulnerabilities.

For home/gaming use, it really seems to be pretty minor/not at all (Didn't impact my 7700k in the slightest), and I haven't seen any benchmarks that show a dramatic change. (There absolutely does seem to be an impact on server/data centre loads, but that's some fairly specific loads you probably won't see at home).

It really comes down to what games you play (more cores/threads vs higher raw performance but less threads), but if you wanted a Ryzen System it's probably worth waiting til April for Ryen 2, as much as I don't really want to be the "wait for the next big thing" guy, they are coming soon and will most likely have a reasonable performance bump.

I have a Ryzen 1600x chip and can say I am 100% happy with it.
Runs like a dream and surprisingly cool for an AMD chip, well it is with the H100i attached to it.

I don't have anything to compare against though.
I will say that my Ryzen chip has been great for streaming/recording and gaming at the same time.

If you're set on Intel then you can pull the trigger now, not much point waiting for the 9xxx series (or whatever they're gonna be labeled) as I imagine they'll be late this year/early next. If, however, you're going for Ryzen I'd definitely wait for their refresh due by end of April.
Also all the talk about GPU prices, that really isn't that bad of a price for a 1080Ti.

My only concern would be (considering I had an 800D) with where that radiator and its fans are going to go with that board. With the size of that shield area over the IO component, there won't be any room in the third fan slot above it and then you need to consider spacing from above with where the ram slots are as well. It probably should fit, it just may be tight. It's just more modern cases give a little bit more space up there now.

Overall seems like a decent build to me, the 1080ti will be good, I've got a normal 1080 and it runs fantastic.

I'll 2nd Mythor's comments too, that it's probably worth swapping to one of the Ti's with a 3rd party fan cooler rather than the blower one, they can be pretty loud

Oh wow I never thought I would have space issues with this case :o

Might have to look into the other Ti's if multiple people are recommending it

Is hyper-threading really that much of a performance boost :?:

Is there much improvement to be had from a 6 core cpu over a quad :?:

Depends what he is doing with it I guess.
For streaming/recording while gaming on the same machine, yes the extra cores makes a huge difference.
But that all depends on the end use

With the feedback that the non blower coolers are better, is this card ok?

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/391 ... 80-ti-11gb

I haven't used Inno3D before so I'd prefer to stick to a brand I know

Yeah that's a good card, should run better and be a bit quieter than the initial one you had listed (and it has LEDs, so, you know)

Well all parts purchased and built... everything runs like a dream. And much quieter than I was expecting :)

Now, my old 24 inch Dell monitor isn't quite getting the most out of the PC I feel, so looking to upgrade that too. I was going to go for either a Dell 27 inch 1440p monitor or a similar Acer one, then a friend pointed this one out...

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/412 ... ng-monitor

I measured my desk and this will fit in my internal space between my internal shelves (which the speakers are on) with about 1cm to spare... seems like fate :P Any comments on this monitor? Everything I've read has suggested its amazing but didn't want to find out after purchase that someone had bought one and had issues :)

So it's a bad time to tell you that they went on sale on ebay for $1140... right?

That's likely the X34 rather than the X34P.

That's a nice looking monitor and I would be interested in a review from you once you get it. I've got a cheapy LG 21:9 monitor and overall it's pretty good (for the price) but the thing that annoys me the most with it is watching videos on youtube because of the black bars down the side.

All that screen real estate and a full screen video is sitting in the middle. Some games I've found can do the same. And unless you are extra productive and use lots of different programs open at the same time to fill in those areas, you are going to have a lot of open space. :D

Still, I would like a monitor with all those features as it looks sexy as hell.
