the health report with norman swan has had a few episodes about codeine, that suggests there isnt a single scientific study that can say its beneficial.
That seems a little dubious as the relief of pain has definitely been shown to be beneficial and boy howdy, do opioids reduce pain! :D

There's an example of one of the studies involving back pain where opioids were found to be only 10% better than placebo, you can read the transcript on the ABC site: http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/pro ... transcript
The short version is that there can be some benefit in terms of pain reduction, but the risks associated may mean the pain is preferable, and generally in the case of back pain it's better to address the cause if you can.

If you legitimately need it you shouldn't have any trouble getting a prescription. A lot of people have convinced themselves they need it when they don't, or when addressing the underlying cause would be far better for them. Addiction's a bitch, this should help in reducing the numbers accidentally dosing themselves into it, which is a good thing. :)

Doctor prescribed me some meloxicam (same family as ibuprofen) for my joint pain and good lord does it work well for me. I feel genuinely great after I take one of those, like I didn't even realise how much pain I was carrying around until it was gone.
It's also given me some first hand experience about why people might become habitual drug users. It's not something I have/would ever do but I have some understanding of the appeal now.

That's another issue with it, anyone is going to be able to get it - your typical bulk billing local asian medical centre will almost prescribe you anything you ask for above and beyond nurofen plus, it's just the inconvenience of needing to take time off work to go to the doctor to get something you should just be able to get at the bloody pharmacy with ID.

nurofen plus seems to be the best thing for when i feel a migraine coming on, much better than being wiped out for a day in the dark, tried pretty much everything else that isnt prescription and the codeine makes a difference for me anyway, oh well might have to get something stronger if i have to get a script anyway :P

Panadol and Neurofen don't do much for me these days. I can take some when I wake up with a headache but the entire day is pretty much a write off until I crash and get enough sleep.

I'm not sure how anyone who has ever taken codeine can argue that its not a million times better than paracetamol.

Actually it will sound weird, but I can say that. I actually take a lot of codeine (I do have a legitimate reason for it), but not for pain management. In fact, I find it terrible for managing pain and would rather use something mild, like paracetamol. The reason I use it is because I have Ulcerative Colotis and codeine is wonderful in controlling my bowels. Anyone else taking the same amounts that I do, would no doubt be blocked up for a month (if only) and zoned out for just as long. Image

I know I'm addicted to it and my Doctor knows that I am addicted to it (I have to be with the amounts I take) but I do try to ration it out at times as the more I take the less effect it tends to have so it is better for me to use it as randomly as I can. That's why I can safely say that it isn't better then paracetamol in pain management, BUT I CAN ONLY SPEAK FOR MYSELF as it has a different affect for me, then it would for those that use it occasionally and for normal pain management. Of course it is probably working for other pains, I just don't experience the same way. If I have a headache or similar, good old Aspro clear works wonders for me.

I will say this Norman Swan sounds like an idiot though and has never had a reason to use it, whether it be for pain management or for what I need it for. I love people telling me how it is all in my mind. Image

I will add though, My Doctor needs to call and get authority from (I can't remember exactly who it's called) whenever I need a new script, and unless you have a known illness or longtime injury, I don't think it would be very easy to get continual scripts as the Doctors are then held accountable for it.

As far as I'm aware they're scrapping the national database, one of the dramas pharmacists had with the new system is that it will be easy to doctor shop as there wont be any central database to control it. Not many people are taking it as you need to, or those people who chug 50 tablets a day though, it will just be a matter of getting a script with a few repeats so you can have a box on hand if/when you need it.

For myself I've found that codeine in doses available from stuff like panadeine doesn't have any extra effect compared to just paracetamol.

A lot of drugs will be different for different people, plus other fun bits like the placebo effect.

I've had a solid 2 months of applying for jobs with constant knock-backs and not even an interview and now this week I've had 3 places contacting me to set up interviews. Is a little consistency too much to ask for?

It is indeed a very weird thing. From my brief reading, it still works somewhat even if you know it's a placebo and also otherwise identical drugs work better if you know they cost more.

They've also found than an injection works better than a tablet, even if neither has an active ingredient. Brains are weird! :)

Want to try Battlefront beta. Says I need new video drivers - only 400 MB, shouldn't be too long.

Both nVidia websites are downloading at max of 100 KB/sec :( No mirrors any more because nobody cares.

I'm back babies!

crazy couple of months, my partner started having falls again and some really horrible issues with her short term memory/showing some changes in her behaviour, new MRI showed the radiation necrosis started to flare up again so another round of fortnightly treatments was prescribed, they fell on the week my mother in law was on site for her job so we needed to bring out toddler with us and work has been crazy and shit so apart from the odd shitposting session on discord I've hardly bene online at all.

but this week we did an MRI and the doctors are pretty happy with how its shirnking so we are down to monthly trips now. life might return to our version of normal, will still be a while before we see any improvment on her memeory and other brain issues

Thanks guys, not really sure how I feel about it, in many ways it doesn't really matter, nothing actually changes as a result of this.

Glad it's done with though.
