Mega Drive mini... yes, it's here!

Post by Mugsy » 17 Apr 2018, 12:27

Just the announcement, bugger all details. Not too enthusiastic about ATGames being involved.

I don't have a Switch nor am I planning on getting one.

Besides, I've got the entire SMS and MD collection on my PSP already so the portability of the switch doesn't intrigue me.

Seems the whole ATGames thing is the first thing people talk about when it comes to the Mega Drive mini...

I think the guy in the second video is being overly nice about it. If people are spending $120 or whatever it is on this thing, they want an above average quality product not the average quality level of the Mega Drive Flashback unit ATGames have released to date. If ATGames can't deliver something that's on par with a NES or SNES mini both in terms of build quality and emulation performance, then I reckon they've failed.

Thinking about this some more, I have the feeling this will just be a rehash of the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection games bundle:

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alien Storm
Altered Beast
Bonanza Bros.
Columns
Comix Zone
Decap Attack
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Dynamite Headdy
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco II: The Tides of Time
ESWAT: City Under Siege
Fatal Labyrinth
Flicky
Gain Ground
Golden Axe
Golden Axe II
Golden Axe III
Kid Chameleon
Phantasy Star II
Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Ristar
Shining Force
Shining Force II
Shining in the Darkness
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic Spinball
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 3
The Story of Thor: A Successor of the Light
Super Thunder Blade
Vectorman
Vectorman 2

Of course, they could stick on the likes of Dynamite Duke, Revenge of Shinobi (if that Spider-man thing doesn't rear it's head), Super Hang On, Out Run, After Burner, Space Harrier, ToeJam and Earl, the two 16 bit Wonderboy games, General Chaos and Boogerman.

They released 10 more games in the line up. I'm surprised they have Earthworm Jim and two Disney games in there. Contra or Probotector is a nice addition too...

You know, the more I think about it, I think Mortal Kombat might make the cut...

- they made MK work on the 3 button controller... start is block and they reduced it to one punch button... quite playable
- no blood by default so will be sufficiently kiddie friendly (thank god for the blood code... ABACABB or DULLARD... memory is being tested now)
- and most importantly, it was a pinnacle triumph Sega had over Nintendo for being the better port and EVERYONE knew about it

Here's the full list of games...

Sonic The Hedgehog
Ecco the Dolphin
Castlevania: The New Generation
Space Harrier 2
Shining Force
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
ToeJam & Earl
Comix Zone
Altered Beast
Gunstar Heroes
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
Thunder Force 3
Super Fantasy Zone
Shinobi 3
Streets of Rage 2
Earthworm Jim
Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Probotector
Landstalker
Mega Man: The Wily Wars
Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Story of Thor
Golden Axe
Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium
Sonic The Hedgehog Spinball
Vectorman
Wonder Boy in Monster World
Tetris
Darius
Road Rash 2
Strider
Virtua Fighter 2
Alisia Dragoon
Kid Chameleon
Monster World IV
Eternal Champions
Columns
Dynamite Headdy
Light Crusader

Total of 42 games instead of 40 because they've added Darius (was never released on the Mega Drive) and the ultra rare mega drive version of Tetris which there's like less than 10 copies in the world.

Still bummed that the controller in the western editions are only 3 buttoned ones.

Also an interesting vid on M2 who did the emulation work for the mini...
